Unfortunately, this brilliance was somewhat subverted by the conversion of those stories into novel form. At the time I found it as utterly heartbreaking as Bradbury or early Ballard. People buy slow glass that has been placed in so that later they can enjoy the view in their homes or workplaces. The science I postulated above is very primitive and probably a weird explanation as I mostly flunked my masters, yet keyword searches would help you pelt along. A sheet set up in the Scottish Highlands can therefore be sold to a city-dweller and provide them with years of beautiful views. Hagan spread a tartan blanket on the wall and we sat down, feeling slightly self-conscious at having been translated from our city-oriented lives into a rural tableau. If you strain yourself a little more, slow glass is an earthbound black domain. I remember when I were but a teen noticing just how much energy is stored in a sheet of slow glass. A coarse discrepancy could mean that a pane intended to be five years thick might be five and a half, so that light which entered in summer emerged in winter; a fine discrepancy could mean that noon sunshine emerged at midnight. The other two are more universally applicable; one is about grief, and the other about justice.

Each side of slow glass shows you past seen by other side - how far back depends on specifications of glass. The slow glass serves as a metaphor for this reflection and Shaw blatantly illustrates the superficial nature of outward appearances throughout the story. And even though Ender Wiggins is a great character, the concept of the first book is probably why I read it in the first place. I don't do that—any fool knows that a place which doesn't look right in summer never looks right. The family scene of wife and child was of years ago, seen through slow glass.

The girl remained in view for a few seconds, dress glowing warmly, then moved back into the room. Campbell considered actually original at the time of publication. I was struck by the cruising in the car, the worrying about a pregnancy and the two nuclear families. I had no hope of equaling, for example, Moore with his: Oft in the stilly night, Ere slumber's chain has bound me, Fond Memory brings the light, Of other days around me. Think of the uses as a recording medium. Maybe a futuristic metamaterial with tinkered refractive index.

Comments with spoilers will not be moderated, and hidden spoilers are discouraged in discussions about individual books. This has got to be one of the best and most perceptive short-story reviews I've read. I had never seen one of the farms before and at first found them slightly eerie—an effect heightened by imagination and circumstance. Kate falls in love with Hiram's son Bobby and assists him in breaking free of his father's manipulation, while inadvertently allowing herself to be manipulated by Hiram. We have so much choice, so why choose toxic nostalgia? The narrator discusses with Hagan the price of his slow glass. She was looking towards the now empty window with what I thought was a slightly puzzled expression.

A new piece was always jet black because nothing had yet come through, but one could stand the glass beside, say, a woodland lake until the scene emerged, perhaps a year later. Some readers might struggle with seeing this story as science fiction, but I appreciate Shaw's narrative style and definitely want to read more of his work. When they opened the door, they realized that the inside was dirty, and that the woman and child weren't there. That is why it has stuck with us for so very long. This was easier to do in Light of Other Days compared to other stories, because there were no differences in the world, except for the one scientific discovery of the glass that it takes light a long time to pass through. What does it mean that society commoditises the beauty of its landscapes in this way? This is not a story of artistic glass, but one of love and loss and how it affects us and those around us. I didn't like the relationship between the narrator and his wife.

As you said, there are no innate skills, but it goes both ways. A married couple goes on a short trip to seek a special window glass that takes days for light to pass through it, enabling the glass to have a special effect: what you see through the glass is what happened several weeks, months, or years ago. The stuff might be reasonably priced out here. This gem of, to me, incomprehensibility not only told me nothing, it convinced me once again that a mind should concern itself less with causes than effects. Hagan says how fine the view is from there; as he talks, the narrator, still looking at the house, wonders if the small boy is blind as well.
